چکیده

Quantum mechanical simulation is an invaluable tool for studying material properties and behaviors due to its versatility and ability to probe properties not easily accessible in experiments. Employing the computational power of high performance HPCMP supercomputers, we investigated the oxidation states of ions in insulating solids, the stabilization of highly-polar PbTiO3 films, and defects in SONAR related materials. The ability to identify oxidation states guides our understanding of the behavior of the materials under investigation, providing great potential to design functional materials from an atomic level.

Evidence for strain-induced ferroelectric order in epitaxial thin-film KTaO3.

In perovskite-structure epitaxial films, it has been theoretically predicted that the polarization and the coherence of polar order can increase with increasing crystallographic strain. Experimental evidence of strain-induced long-range ferroelectric order has not been obtained thus far, posing the fundamental question of whether or not strain can induce the long-range polar order. Here we demo...

Polarization retention and switching in ferroelectric nanocapacitors with defects on tensile substrates

We analyze the effect of defects on the polarization stability and switching of epitaxial nanocapacitor ferroelectric films on tensile substrates using a thermodynamic approach. Defects are either frozen-in dipoles of the p-type or trapped space charges. The retention of the in-plane ferroelectric polarization does not suffer nearly at all from the possible presence of dead layers or polar defe...

Tunable Schottky Barrier in Photovoltaic BiFeO3 Based Ferroelectric Composite Thin Films

We examine the photo-assisted polarization loop in a BiFeO3 thin film under UV light illumination. BiFeO3 thin film prepared by pulsed laser deposition method onto the BaTiO3 thin film and the polarization behavior has been measured under poling voltage. Our results show the engineered polarization due to controllable schottky barrier under inverse poling voltage. This control on schottky barri...

Polar-Graded Multiferroic SrMnO3 Thin Films.

Engineering defects and strains in oxides provides a promising route for the quest of thin film materials with coexisting ferroic orders, multiferroics, with efficient magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Precise control of the strain gradient would enable custom tailoring of the multiferroic properties but presently remains challenging. Here we explore the existence of a polar-graded ...

Suppressed dependence of polarization on epitaxial strain in highly polar ferroelectrics.

A combined experimental and computational investigation of coupling between polarization and epitaxial strain in highly polar ferroelectric PbZr(0.2)Ti(0.8)O3 (PZT) thin films is reported. A comparison of the properties of relaxed (tetragonality c/a approximately 1.05) and highly strained (c/a approximately 1.09) epitaxial films shows that polarization, while being amongst the highest reported ...
